Sensitivity analysis, which accounts for the variation in the output and its dependence on input, helps to understand our models better, it helps to communicate with our models’ results in a more robust way. When it is applied spatially, sensitivity analysis produces one map for individual effect, and one for interaction effect per input. So, the challenge becomes how we can reduce the visual load of spatial sensitivity results.
The Folded Map is an art+science book project that applies the pop-up structure to map information. The first layer of the book cover includes graticules which represent latitudes and longitudes. The second layer, representing the main body of the map, uses large areas of color to differentiate between regions, with blank spaces indicating missing information. Color layer is produced via marbling technique, which reflects the interaction between input and output in spatial models, and how any variation in the input can result in different outputs. The third layer employs Turkish map folding, incorporating paper mechanisms in the shape of a collapsible house, which obscures internal information and requires audience interaction to make it readable. By utilizing a folding structure, the map can transition from flat to three-dimensional, enhancing complexity while retaining visual appeal and interest.
INITIAL PROPOSAL NOTECARD
"The transition from my accustomed realm of detailed map visualizations to the abstract nature of artistic expression presented a profound challenge. In my usual practice, I rely on precise details to convey meaning, particularly in the structured format of map representations. However, engaging with the abstract language of art demanded a shift in perspective. Rather than delineating every minor detail, I had to explore the power of suggestion and interpretation, where less detail often speaks volumes more than intricate precision."

Seda Şalap-Ayça and Zhu Gaocanyue visit the RISD Library for inspiration
“Our initial vision for the project included incorporating layers of meaning through the use of transparency as a metaphorical tool. However, translating this vision into tangible form proved to be a daunting task. While we envisioned a myriad of possibilities, bringing them to fruition required navigating unforeseen obstacles and compromises. Yet, despite the challenges, the process of refinement and adaptation ultimately enriched our collective understanding and appreciation of the project's underlying concepts."

Seda Şalap-Ayça and Zhu Gaocanyue find inspiration in the RISD Library Special Collections
"The idea showed up step by step. At first, we only had a vague idea and a few keywords. After visiting the special collection together where we were inspired by other artists and how they combined different materials and forms, we discussed more details and purchased at the RISD store. The project plan came at the end of the first day after we testing for rounds of different experiments with marbling papers and fabric. Then we separated work on the second day and finished it right before the deadline."

“I relished the opportunity to engage in every stage of the creative process, from the tactile exploration of marble coloring techniques to the precise artistry of pen plotting. Each task offered a new perspective and expanded my repertoire of skills, culminating in the discovery of novel techniques such as the intricate folding of technique. This hands-on experience not only deepened my connection to the project but also fostered a shared accomplishment.”

The popup book on display during critique session
“It is undoubtedly a challenge of both creativity and practical skills, as well as a challenge of how knowledge from different disciplines can be intertwined and translated… It was an intense experience where we tried to understand what the other people wanted and how to help each other. I never thought I would be able to complete a project in two days, but we did a great job.”

FINAL OUTCOMES
“While the journey from conceptualization to realization was fraught with challenges and uncertainties, it was also marked by moments of profound discovery and growth. I gained a deeper appreciation for the nuanced language of visual communication and the transformative power of collaborative creativity. As we navigated the complexities of the creative process together, I came to understand that true innovation arises not from individual brilliance but from the harmonious convergence of diverse perspectives and talents.”
